		<description>It seems a bit early for the muscles in inthe finger to atrophy.

Were I a scientist, I'd have background info on what I'm about to say, but instead, I'm just going to offer what might be common sense: I bet that in the case of muscle or bone or tendon injury, the body naturally renders those areas as immobile as possible in order for healing to take place.
