Grouchy

I have to rush to type this before the foul piece of excrement that’s known as Internet Explorer crashes for the 87th time this hour.

I feel like shit and I’m grouchy. Mexican farmers light fires every year and cause this hellish haze to settle over Texas. Right now it’s so bad outside that even my neighbors houses look misty. Like it’s foggy outside. The smoke has clogged my head and ears and makes my eyes itch and I cough all night long and have this low droning headache. Allergy medicines don’t help. We haven’t seen blue sky in weeks.

All we can do it just wait until either it rains, the wind changes, or the fires go out. And this happens every damned year. Absolutely freaking ridiculous. I can’t wait to go to Las Vegas where the air is usually clear. I want to go down to Mexico and throttle those farmers and arsonists who can’t seem to grasp the concept that they are making millions of people miserable, even though they nearly burned their entire country in 1998.

Will people never learn?

My mom’s friend (who is still in Austin) told her that the fires are back and how hazy it is — I remember being at the Kerrville Folk Festival in 98 when that crap happened and it was practically unendurable. My heart goes out.

    I agree, but…

I wonder how many of those farmers are good-sized landowners who could afford to invest in other practices, and how many are campesinos who barely keep their families in beans and tortillas and farm the only way they can?

What ticks me off even worse is the parts of the world where they’re burning virgin forest, rather than (mostly) burning land that’s already in agricultural use as in Mexico. Remember the bad fires a couple of years ago in Indonesia? We had a little haze in Austin, but they say you couldn’t even see the sun in Indonesia, and that was largely forest they were burning.

P.S. Try Mozilla. I’ve got a new 12″ Powerbook (inspired in part by you, I believe!) and I’ve tried IE, Opera, Safari and Mozilla. Mozilla for OS X seems the most solid to me.

Glad I could inspire you to buy a new computer! I’m not personally involved in the forest burning so it’s less to my forefront, know what I mean? The Mexico smoke makes me feel like crap, and in that way I know that it exists and occurs yearly, but if they burn in Indonesia it’s not right there in my face.

    Maybe I’m shallow, but I’m honest! 😉
