Rainbow tears

Things having to do with “rainbow” that make me cry:

Somewhere Over the Rainbow as sung by Judy Garland. My grandmother’s favorite song. I miss her when I hear it.

The Rainbow Connection. No idea why. Nostalgia? Mourning Jim Henson? The lyrics?

The Rainbow Bridge poem. Shit, I can’t even look at the title without choking up.

There’s a version of the Garland song performed by Izzie Kamakawiwo’ole that pulls my heart through my chest and makes me sob. It’s painfully beautiful. They play it on KGSR sometimes. It starts out with a ukelele and him humming. In fact, it was the music for the short-lived etoys site.

Funny thing – I was shopping in the big Catholic church thrift store on S. Congress about a month ago, trying to get my mind off the cat, when I heard that on the speakers. I’d never heard the whole thing, just the part from the commercial, and I wondered who it was. I’m glad to know!

That’s the same version they used when Dr. Green died on ER… also used in the movie, Finding Forrester (at the end of the movie… immediately after we find out Forrester died..)

    It’s so sweetly sad.

I think I’ve listened to it 20 times in the past 24 hours, and I can’t stop humming it now!
