ARGH

May 6, 2003 - 3:51 am 3 Comments

Yesterday I checked airfares and there was a $600 first class fare to Las Vegas. I held off on booking it because I didn’t understand it, and now it’s gone. I guess I didn’t realize that airlines can have a fare available for one day only. What are the odds I’ll find that fare again?

Slim to none.

I’m absolutely furious that I missed out on that deal. Now the lowest I can find is $850. I’ve been cursing a blue streak for the last few hours, and trying to find any remnant of the good fare left over on any of the online booking engines. No such luck.

Damn, but I am seriously hacked off. I hate missing a good bargain.

Go jump in the lake

May 3, 2003 - 10:55 pm Comments Off on Go jump in the lake

Let me preface this by saying that every single time we have plans to do something as a family, one or both of the children refuses to sleep the night before. Last night the baby didn’t get to sleep until 2, and she was up before 9.

Today we went to the lake. We packed up the kids and bathing suits and cooler and towels and snacks and headed out to Lake LBJ, where my brother and I are building a house. The baby screamed (bloodcurdlingly, at a volume setting of 11) all the way there.

I hadn’t seen the lakehouse since before they even staked out the foundation, and now it’s all framed up and they’re finishing putting on the raw roof. I don’t know what the technical term for the stage of completion is, but it was amazing to walk through the house and see in real life what I’d only seen on a piece of papar. I’m not the kind of girl who easily visualizes spatial references, so I just couldn’t picture what it was going to look like. I know now, and I can can sum it up in one word:

Huge.

Then I took the girls back to the car and started changing everyone’s clothes because like dunderheads we didn’t wear bathing suits on the way out there. The back doors of the Suburban swung shut on us. There I was trapped with 2 hot kids in the back of the car and no door handle to let us out easily. And I was naked from the waist down. Once I got some clothes on, I hauled my fat ass over the back seat with its accompanying kid carseats and let some fresh air into the car. Both girls had gotten prickly heat by this time.

We have a little beach area on our lot that the kids went wading in. The baby got her toes wet and started shivering. She’s like her mama – water’s only good when it’s 78 degrees or warmer. The 3 yo had to be dragged out of the water kicking and screaming. I think we know which one the water baby is.

We collected all the gear and loaded up the boat and got the life jackets on the kids which precipitated another round of screaming by the baby, who didn’t like her jacket. I could kind of understand that because it was the really uncomfortable kind of jacket that we had to wear on the cruise ship during the drill and I almost started hollering then, too.

So there we were in the boat, toting around a child who for all the world sounded like we were pulling out her toenails with pliers. People on the shore and other boats looked like they were about to call the cops on us. 2 minutes into our much-anticipated boat ride, we were pulling back in. The preparation took 3 times as long as the actual trip.

I think next time we’ll just have to get special toddler life vests. I even think they’ll enjoy boat rides. I’d expected the older one to freak out once we started moving, but she just grinned. She only told hub to slow down once. This is good news for our plans to buy a boat of our own.

I was pretty meh about the whole lakehouse thing, but now I’m really excited. I can’t wait for it to be finished. I have a feeling that we’ll start camping out in it as soon as they run water. Who needs carpet and paint?

Pictures, at last

I promised some cruise pics, so here they are. They’re at 1024×768, but some are cool as desktops so if you want something at a different resolution let me know.

Scenery from boat and beach.
Pictures of Cozumel.
Ship pictures.
I had a hell of a time trying to figure out what our room would be like, so for the record this is room V1 on the Carnival Jubilee, a category 12 (cat 12) suite on the Verandah deck.

Trip Report

We got on the ship around 12:45 and headed up to check out the room. It was nice, about the size of a hotel room, with room for 2 twin beds and a sectional couch. I took out all my gear – laptop, gps, phone, camera, and various accessories and proceeded to set it all up. Then we went exploring, found our table at dinner and the Lido deck where the pool is. Conveniently enough, there was a bar there and it was also the muster station for our lifeboat drill, which was supposed to start at 3:40 but didn’t get going until 4:15. It was really disorganized and they didn’t check passenger names off on a list or anything, just made a cursory check that you had a life jacket on. After an interminable 30 minutes or more in the jackets, they announced the drill was over without actually taking us to the lifeboats, so I have no idea where our boat is. During the drill, we set sail.

I’m leaving tomorrow for my cruise, so updates in the next days will probably be few and far between. Don’t miss me too much!

The secret to being treated like a queen

February 14, 2003 - 1:28 am Comments Off on The secret to being treated like a queen

… is to be lucky enough to have a brother like mine.

Summary – we’re staying in a hotel where we’re being treated like royalty; we had first row tickets for the rodeo (and I got dirt down my shirt from the bucking broncos thundering past); and we switched between first row seats and cool Terrace level seats for the Jewel concert.

Hub and I came to San Antonio for Valentine’s weekend, to stay in a chic new hotel and pig out on good food and soak in the ambience of the Riverwalk. I grew up in San Antonio and sometimes I miss it terribly.

My brother called me up a few weeks ago and asked me if I was interested in any tickets to the rodeo. I checked out the performers, looked to see who hub might enjoy most, him not being a country and western fan, and saw that Jewel was playing on 2/13. Since it was so close to Valentine’s, we decided to make a trip out of it. I looked on a bunch of hotel reservation sites for a place on the river but everything was sold out or $450 a night except for this one new hotel, Hotel Valencia, which was brand spanking new – barely a month open. I made reservations there and mentioned it to my sis-in-law, who said that my brother was one of the investors and that I should call him and get a discount. Which I did, of course. A penny saved is a penny more that I can spend on a new laptop.

He called the hotel and put me on The List. When we got here, they fell all over themselves being nice to us. We got a tour of all the public areas, personal introductions from almost all the staff around, and a promise that anything we needed, we should call down and they’d provide.

The room is very nice and quite contemporary. The closet and bathroom doors have frosted glass inserts; the bath towels are all waffle weave rather than terrycloth; all the soap and shampoo things have different and wonderful aromas. The bedroom is completely decorated in neutrals – beige walls, grey carpet with a brown sisal area rug on top, comfy brown leather chair and footstool, a huge case of bamboo sticks on top of the long built-in desk that also houses the television, faux fur bedspreads, brown leather headboards, etc. The only touch of color is a small print of the prow of a Venetian gondola, done in electric blue. Also there are two high-speed internet access ports, and net access is free.

The effect is striking but comfortable. The only drawback that I’ve noticed is that walls are very thin. We can hear people in the next room or in the hallway like they’re in the room with us. No biggie, in that case I’ll just crank down the AC for white noise.

We left the hotel and went to the swank new SBC center for the rodeo, first stopping at the New Frontier Club for dinner – prime rib, garlic cheddar mashers, green beans, yum. My brother stopped in while we were eating to have a drink and gave us another pair of tickets on the Terrace Level to use during the concert because the acoustics were better up there.

A little late for the rodeo, we got there in time to see the calf scramble, barrel racing, Budweiser Clydesdales (we were so close, one of them drooled on me which I casually wiped on hub), and bronc and bull riding. Other than the chick in the seat next to me occupying my ribcage with her elbow, it was really cool. The seats were just your basic best seats in the house – 50 yard line, first row, close enough to get spattered with dirt and horse sweat. I’m glad we didn’t take the kids, because I surely would have had my nose broken by the three year old crawling over me trying to escape from the massive animals who looked like they were going to sit on top of us.

When the concert started we watched from the first row for a while, then decided to move to the Terrace Club when the guy behind us wouldn’t stop shouting at the top of his longs about the percussion section to his girlfriend. That’s a man who deserved to get a fork in the eye. And then during the slow songs his girlfriend sang along at the top of her lungs – off key. She drowned out Jewel on “Foolish Games”. Twit. We could hear much better up at club level, but by that time the concert was just about over.

Upon returning to the room, we found a bottle of Evian on ice and a basket of oranges with a handwritten note from the hotel manager welcoming us and telling us to call if we needed anything.

So here’s a big thanks to my brother, who made possible a very nice evening, full of good food, good entertainment, and good lodging.

part ii

we then took a short jaunt to see the river, which is a few HUNDRED yards (or meters to you who use such terms) closer to the ranch house than usual. not to worry, the house is ok because it’s the highest spot in the county. our biggest risks are:

1. getting stuck in the mud. the kind of mud that eats four wheel drive for breakfast.
2. getting bit by a rattlesnake. the foreman said to keep an eye out by the house because it’s (relatively) dry up here.
3. getting carried of by a flock of mosquitoes. the foreman also said that at night the bugs are so bad that they will coat your bare skin to the point that you can’t see skin anymore. shiver.

i think i’m going to bathe in bugspray tonight. don’t want to take a shower for fear of backing up the septic tank. tomorrow we are going to take pics and i will post some when we get back.

captain bugspray, signing off.
