Wait, what time of year is it?

December 23, 2008 - 12:39 am Comments Off on Wait, what time of year is it?

We didn’t even get a tree this year.

It seemed like a smart decision a couple of weeks ago, but I’m a little sad about it now.

I’ve been on a huge knitting jag lately. I made three hats for people this Christmas. In terms of time spent working on them, they’re by far the most expensive things I’ve ever given to anyone!

Another one

Me: Do you ever see sounds?
Hub: Do I need to leave again?

A typical conversation at my house

Me: Where did I read that thing about beheaded people being able to communicate by blinking for a few seconds after being guillotined? It’s driving me nuts!
Hub: ….*sighs and walks away*

A good feeling

My school years, from about 6th grade on, were pretty rough. Sixth grade is when I had a teacher who bullied me, friends who ditched me, and the beginning of a severe inferiority complex about the popular clique. It pretty much went downhill from there; I wasn’t cool enough for the cool kids, hip enough for the hipsters, nerdy enough for the smart kids, and so on. Paging John Hughes. So I got picked on a bunch, didn’t have many friends, and had plenty of personal issues to boot, many of which I’m just not going to go into here.

So it was that much more gratifying when I got a phone call this week from someone I knew in high school, with whom I was friendly but not friends. (He had his own personal demons while growing up, which I imagine were also pretty hard to deal with, but of course in high school it’s all about our OWN problems, right? Nobody else has anything wrong with them, and even if they do, mine’s worse!) He wanted to tell me that he thought kindly of me in high school and wished we had been friends then. It really made my day. So if you’re out there, caller, cheers to you.

Sometimes it’s not what we HAVE to do, but what we DON’T have to do that’s important. He didn’t have to call me just to say that, but I’m so glad he did.

Watermelon

I thought the watermelon was safe. I thought wrong. Hub found the remains this afternoon. The half weighed almost 2 lbs., so it had to be something strong enough to lug around a 4 lb. fruit. Could have been deer, armadillos, squirrels – who knows? All I know is that all of the eggplant have been gnawed off the vine and smashed to bits around the yard (saw the squirrels carrying them up the trees), the few green tomatoes we had before we left for Florida were no longer there when we got back, and there’s no baby fruit left anywhere in the garden.

Between dogs, deer, and squirrels, we’re not destined to reap any of the fruit of our labors.

Good news, bad news

The good news is that the doctor doesn’t think I have kidney stones.

The bad news is that he thinks I have diverticulitis.

Barium milkshake at 6 tomorrow morning. Yum.
