Hotblooded

Poor kid. The baby has a fever. It was over 103 this morning. I took her to the doctor, who poked one toe for blood, and their machine didn’t read it correctly. So they had to poke another toe for more blood, and their machine didn’t read that correctly either. Did I mention that this poor kid’s feet are totally grimy and her toenails are on the order of 6 inches long?

Then they decided to take blood from her arm. The child was pretty pissed off at this point, as any reasonable person would be.

Before, after, and during each blood draw, I was reminded that we didn’t give her the pneumococcal vaccine. Yes, thank you, I remember. We didn’t want it because it’s new, and the last vaccine that was new (Hep B) had mercury in it and was recalled after a couple of years of kids being injected with it. I’ll let someone else’s kid be the guinea pig. Umm hmm, yes, doctor, I sure will keep it in mind. As something I don’t want to do.

Finally the results came back, and guess what? They still don’t know what it is, other than a virus. There are apparently a couple of things going around, one of them being roseola, which does this to you (but only for a couple of days). Should be interesting.

Oh, and my wrist hurts. Look for a change in the weather soon – at least in Austin.

Why?

Why is this man doing this to his face?
Why is this girl doing this to her rat?
Why are these dogs wearing those things?
Oh, and do you know whose boobs those are?

On Boobs

The strangest thing just happened to me. It’s pretty gross, too, so you may want to finish eating first. It’s about my boob, but not in a good way.

For the past couple of months I’ve noticed this blue spot on the side of my boob. It would kind of go away when I pressed on it, so I figured it was some damn sort of varicose vein or something. Tonight I noticed that it was angry looking and that there was a black thing poking out. I got worried that maybe it was a tick or something that died and was in me, and that’s just gross, so I picked and picked until I could pull it out.

It was a stitch. I had breast reduction surgery in 1992. They gave me “dissolving” stitches. This one didn’t dissolve. That means that this damn thing has been in me for ten years, working its way out.

All together now: ewwwwwwwwww.

Oh, the shame. We rented Royal Tennenbaums and J&SB, have only watched RT, and both movies are sitting on my desk, a couple of weeks overdue. I’m trying the “ignore it and it will go away” approach that always didn’t work well at all when I had overdue movies (and resulted in my owing Blockbuster some $150 in late fees on a couple of different occasions).

Amazon gold box

Riedel Vinum Single Malt Scotch Glasses, Set of 6 (cool, but $70, sheesh)
SanDisk 128 MB Cruzer Data Storage Device
Simply Calphalon Nonstick Anodized 10-Piece Cookware Set (I love our Calphalon cookware, but wish we had more nonstick. If this stuff had the stay-cool handles I’d be all over it.)
Oneida Satin Accent 20-Piece Stainless Steel Flatware Set, Service for 4
West Bend 79586 6-Quart Capacity Electric Wok

All stuff I’m much more likely to buy than a $1000 table saw.

Well, I went and did it. I bought an iPod. Now before you go calling me an Apple flunky, let me explain. I actually did not plan on buying an iPod. I didn’t want one – I thought they were too trendy and/or too expensive. I researched MP3 players for days, trying to see what player to get that 1) had a large capacity, 2) used Firewire and not USB, 3) had a good price, 4) worked on both PC and Mac, and 5) wasn’t too heavy. The only one that met all the criteria was the iPod. The Rio Riot is nice, but USB, which means that it takes about 8 minutes to transfer a CD as opposed to Firewire’s 10 seconds.

Now I don’t have to haul my CDs to the gym, and when we go on our marathon holiday drives (Thanksgiving: 3 hours plus 4 hours plus 3 hours, for example) we don’t have to take a stack of 15 CDs if we want to listen to an audiobook.

After a week of trying, I finally got an account over at Metafilter. They open up 20 slots at noon PST daily, and I could never get in until today.

The problem with kids…

…is that they appropriate your bubble wrap (a.k.a. “pops” in kid-ese). Your hours of blissfully popping are over. I love big-bubble bubble wrap, and we just got a package with some in it a couple of days ago, and do you know how many bubbles I got to pop? Three, that’s how many. That sucks.

I just discovered the recipe section on the Reynolds Wrap website and I think I’ve died and gone to heaven. Tonight: pork chops in chutney.

That is, if the thunderstorm doesn’t take us out. Just what central Texas needs right now, more rain.

I didn’t get to the gym today, most notably because I have canker sores. In my throat. And they hurt, and that’s on top of the fact that I slept funny the other night and my neck’s all screwed up and I can’t turn my head. Wah wah, pity me, mmmm-kay?

Arf!

This is really disturbing – dolly dogs
So’s this – Punchie and Pikachu.
And this, well, this will give you nightmares – Nimoy sings Baggins ballad.
An angry 404 error.
Odd nipples. Really.
Hey, I think I dated the guy on the right.
There’s some pretty amazing body paint going on here.

By the way, the last 3 links are not safe for work or kids.

sadly just not weird enough

There’s a whole movement dedicated to keeping Austin weird. This menu demonstrates a typically non-weird restaurant. My favorite is the Hill Country Poor People in Silly Hats Made of Arugula, with the Braised Mixed Field Hands in Curdled Lhasa Apso Saliva as an appetizer.
